How We Test SEO Tools
Every tool comparison on SEO Scout follows this methodology. We publish it so you can judge our recommendations — and hold us accountable when we get something wrong.
Who Writes and Reviews Comparisons
Comparisons are produced by the SEO Scout Editorial Team — experienced SEO practitioners who use these tools on client and in-house projects. Each comparison goes through a three-stage review: initial draft, peer review by a second practitioner, and editorial review for accuracy and clarity. See our editorial standards for the full process.
Test Environment
- Accounts: We test with publicly available free tiers and paid plans where noted. Plan tier and test date are stated at the top of each comparison.
- Sites used: Real websites we manage or have permission to audit — not synthetic demo data unless explicitly labeled.
- Browser: Current Chrome stable on Windows and macOS for extension and web-app testing.
- Baseline: Google Search Console data cross-referenced where applicable for traffic and indexing claims.
What We Measure
Each comparison scores tools across categories relevant to that pairing:
- Keyword research — data freshness, volume accuracy vs. GSC, export options, intent filtering
- Backlink analysis — index size, link discovery speed, spam scoring, export limits
- Site audits — crawl depth, JS rendering, issue prioritization, report clarity
- Rank tracking — location/device options, SERP feature tracking, alert reliability
- Usability — onboarding, UI clarity, learning curve, documentation quality
- Value — pricing at time of review, free-tier usefulness, team seat costs
We do not assign numeric scores unless we have tested both products in the same category on the same site within 30 days of publication.
Update Cadence
Comparisons are reviewed at least quarterly. We update when: a tool changes pricing or removes a feature, a major UI overhaul affects workflow, or a reader reports a factual error we can verify. The "Last reviewed" date on each comparison reflects the most recent full review.
Conflict of Interest
SEO Scout builds its own free SEO tools and Chrome extension. We may recommend our products where they genuinely fit a use case — always with disclosure. We have no paid affiliate relationships with Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, OpenAI, or Jasper at time of publication. Partner relationships are listed on our disclosures page.
What We Won't Do
- Publish "Excellent / Very Good" rating tables without hands-on testing
- Rank a tool #1 because they paid for placement
- Copy spec sheets from vendor marketing pages without verification
- Leave outdated pricing live after a known price change
Report an Error
Found outdated pricing, a broken feature claim, or a factual mistake? Email [email protected] with the comparison URL and what changed. We correct verified errors within five business days.
